My first spring in Korea has swung in full blast and I can’t say I’m sorry to see winter go. This is most exciting because the trees are orgasming and cherry blossoms are blooming in Korea. While I was super ecstatic for the Everland Illuminations, fresh, clear spring has arrived and it’s bringing new starts (and lots of work at school). Although the castle of learning can be quite the damper, the cherry blossoms are a sure way to brighten the mood. Choosing an ideal cherry blossom viewing space is difficult in Korea, but let’s go down the rabbit hole and try, shall we?
Another awesome spot from my hood, Guemjong Station has a more relaxed atmosphere than big festivals or cherry blossoms areas. Many residents of my city bring their children and take photos on this one kilometer stretch of road. The best place is where the cherry blossoms stand tall and hover over the sidewalk. The murals on the walls add a great aesthetic to the picturesque trees.
How to get there: From Guemjong Station (Line 4), walk out exit 3 and follow the road all the way down and back.
Gunpo City Hall/ Post Office
I’m going to take it to my hood with this one, Gunpo City Hall doesn’t have as many blossoms, but they’re amazing and beautiful and off the beaten path. There’s an entire row in front of City Hall and the post office. It’s great for a stroll and photo opp.
How to get there: From Sanbon Station (Line 4), walk toward the square. When you see the fountain make a right and walk to the end of the street. You’ll see City Hall up a hill.
This year, I was quite lucky to experience these lovely blossoms away from the mass crowds. While Gwangyang has its own festival, it was super relaxing to take pictures at our leisure and as many as we liked (without enormous crowds of people). There is a road about a kilometer with these blossoms far from the stream. Even so, the lovely flowers and green grass make for an amazing contrast. Since Gwangyang is down south, the temperature is warmer and more refreshing.
How to get there: 광양 서천변
At night, there is a special illumination at Hadang with different colored lights along a large stretch of road. These flowers give a comforting canopy effect and a great atmosphere. The fluffy white and light pink blossoms charmingly accept the lights so it looks like the blossoms become the vivid red, purple, green, yellow, and blue. Along the road there are vendors selling yummy street food and ajhummas with awful voices singing old 90s tunes. But what’s a festival without some soju and tone-deaf grandma?
How to get there: To access this area, you definitely need a car. Hence why it’s off the beaten path. It’s location is 하동 십리벚꽃길. This place is about a two kilometer stretch of road with nothing but these lovely blossoms flowering by a river and plenty of festival food and drink to keep you comfortable and watered.
Do you know any off the beaten trail cherry blossom spots in Korea? I would love to hear your input. Please share in the comments below so I can visit next year!
