I’m sure if you’re here you’re probably thinking… Where to rent a hanbok in Seoul? Like literally, where can I get my hands on one of those beautiful traditional dresses? Well my friends, look no further. If you’re looking for an ego boost or to feel like a celebrity for the day, I recommend you try One Day Hanbok in Seoul. If Korean is not your language, they explain their services in English, Chinese, and Japanese.

Being in hanbok is such an ego boost because you will get told in Korea and English how beautiful and love you are. People will even ask for photos or they will sneakily take them. The experience is totally worth every won and you can have unforgettable memories wearing One Day Hanbok at Korea’s most beautiful palaces.

One Day Hanbok is one of the most popular hanbok rental shops in the Bukchon area. If you’re planning to rent hanbok during any high times like Seollal or Chuseok beware that there might not be any available reservations or a good selection if you just walk in.

I also recommend you style your hair and do your makeup beforehand because the powder room gets hot and stuffy. In addition, since a lot of people are there, it’ll be hard to get your own spot. Also, one of the cool parts is they have a lot of hair accessories and purses you can borrow with your hanbok free of charge.

The Cost of Renting a Hanbok

So I’m sure right now you’re like hey Gina Bear, show me the monaayyyyy. How much does it cost to rent a hanbok in Seoul? Luckily for you, I think this experience is hella cheap for all the incredible memories you make out of it.

• 4 Hours – 17,400 won
• 24 Hours – 27,200 won
• Special Accessories – 2,000 won + Each
• Late Return – 10,000 won per hour
• Minor Stain – 5,000 – 20,000 won
• Serious Stain – 20,000 won – replacement cost
• Minor Tear – 20,000 – 40,000 won
• Major Tear – full replacement cost

There is a rental deposit required when you go. Either give them or passport or ARC card or 50,000 won per hanbok with an additional 10,000 won after that if you’re in a group. They just want to guarantee you don’t run off with their hanboks and never return.

Inside the shop, you are given two free hanbok fittings. Additional hanbok fittings cost 2,000 Korean Won. The hanbok sizes run from small to extra large. The shop is small but there are two walls filled with a plethora of traditional wear in different colors to choose from. They have about 1-2 attendants to help you try on and tie your hanbok.

Where To Take Photos

What I love most about Korea is the blend of modern and traditional. While there are so many scenic places to take photos, I think the best photos are taken at the more traditional areas.

• Gyeongbokgung Palace 경복궁 – I swear you’ve most likely seen this northern palace featured in most Kdramas or even a Kpop video. You can even participate in a traditional Korean tea ceremony.
• Changdeokgung Palace 창덕궁 – This is the biggest palace due to the expansive grounds built around the appreciation of nature.
• The Secret Garden – You have to pay about 5,000 Korean Won to enter the garden but it’s definitely worth the price of admission. Just check out the pictures.
• Bukchon Hanok Village – This is actually a residential area, so I highly suggest you be quiet. It’s great for photos because of how traditional it is.
• Insadong – Since Insadong is close to Gyeongbokgung Palace and is super popular, you’ll also see a lot of couples hanging out here and taking pictures. In addition, it’s really great for traditional Korean food and vegetarian temple food.

It never gets old being called beautiful. Koreans are super friendly and will be more than happy to assist you in taking pictures. While on our excursion, we met Jin Park, a Congressman running for local office. You never know who you might meet or what you might do. I even sang Arirang with a traditional Korean music band! On other occasions, I took couple photos with my ex, and took lots of photos with my friends.

Is it possible to try on hanbok for free?

Yes! I totally recommend going to the Princess Diary Cafe and Cafe Drama. They have many hanbok you can rent there and take cute photos with in their photo zones.

Is it cultural appropriation to rent hanbok as a foreigner?

Absolutely not. Every time I’ve rented hanbok, I’ve only gotten compliments. In addition, when people find out I can speak Korean, they’re even nicer to me! 🙂

Is it possible to rent hanbok on a rainy or snowy day?

Yes! The staff at One Day Hanbok will make sure that your hem doesn’t drag along the ground. Also do your best to be careful not to drag or step on your hem so it doesn’t get soiled.

After changing into hanbok, can I leave my belongings at the store?

Yes, you can. You can leave your belongings in a red bag and you will be given a slip of paper. Be sure to take all valuables with you as One Day Hanbok cannot be responsible if they are lost or stolen.

Is there anything I need to bring to the rental shop?

Be sure you have your hair and makeup done so that way you don’t waste your time. In addition, if it’s cold outside, make sure you wear warm clothing. If it’s hot, wear shorts and a tank top underneath.
