Frequently Asked Questions
1. What months are summer in Korea?
When is summer in South Korea you might ask? Officially, summer in Korea is from June to August. Although because I have my AC on until the end of September, I’m gonna count that month too.
It is usually very hot and humid. During July, it rains a lot which makes it feel more hot and sweltering during August with high humidity. Two thirds of Korea’s annual rainfall occurs in summer.
2. What is the hottest month in South Korea?
The hottest months in Korea are July and August. August gets up to 29°C to 32°C but can feel even hotter because of the humidity.
3. What is summer like in South Korea?
In short, summer in Korea feels like death. The humidity can make you sweat just from standing outside. In addition, man public establishments and public transportation blast the air conditioning which can make it very cold indoors. During this time, you should probably bring a jean jacket to keep warm.
4. Is Korea hot in summer?
Summers in Korea are hot and humid. There is a monsoon season in Korea in July where the downpour is just constant. Summer starts in June and can last until late September.
What to Pack to Korea
I highly recommend packing as light as possible so that way when you buy all of your favorite Korean products, there will be room in your suitcase. My favorite travel suitcase brand is Béis. I’m obsessed with their weekender bag, carryon, and checked luggage. Use my code for $15 off your first order and 150 points toward your new account.
I lived in Korea from 2015-2021 and am quite familiar with Korean fashion. However, I do not conform to Korean styles of dress because 1) I think the fashion is ugly and 2) it doesn’t fit my body type. I typically wear what looks best on me because this is a free world and I’ll do as I please.
Sadly, many Koreans (especially the older generation) tend not to mind their own business. If they don’t approve of you, sometimes they’ll try to cover you up, say something, or you’ll get lecherous stares from grody old men.
That being said, let’s get on with this Korea summer packing guide.
How To Dress For Summer in Korea
I hate I even have to give this warning, but I feel as your internet big sister, I do need to address some important facts based on my experience. In Korea, the sense of modesty is different. This means you can wear your shorts, skirts, and dresses as short as you want. I promise no one will bat an eye. You will be stared at if you dare to expose your chest or shoulders.
Unfortunately, we still live in a world where many men are predators to women. I have been groped in public and grabbed by lecherous old men because I dared to wear what made me feel confident and beautiful. Be aware as a foreigners we are considered “curvier” and our clothes can make us appear “too sexy.”
A general rule of thumb is if you do choose to wear anything with thin straps and cleavage, you can wear a t-shirt under. If you’re headed to the beach or pool, many Koreans opt to wear rash guards over their swimsuits.
Summer in Korea Essentials
- shorts
- skirts
- dresses
- tank tops (to soak up sweat)
- t-shirts
- blouses
- jean jacket (it gets cold indoors)
- sneakers
- sandals
- swimsuits
- Reusable water bottle
Summer Weather in Korea
What is the weather like in Korea in summer? South Korea has four distinct seasons and I find the weather to be very similar to my hometown Chicago. Every month is slight different so here is a break down of the average temperatures and my own experiences.
This monthly temperature break down should give you a good idea of what to do in South Korea. However, to be honest, the summer season will usually last until September.
June Weather in Korea
During the months of June is the best time to visit South Korea because of all the good weather.. Early June, the weather is transitioning out of spring with higher temperatures.
The average high will range from 21°C to 27°C (70°F to 80°F) during the day. It cools down a little bit at night so be sure to wear a light jacket. The average lows are about 16°C (61°F).
July Weather in Korea
Honest to goodness, July is my least favorite month to travel in Korea. This is when monsoon rains make humidity go from zero to I’m now swimming in the air. The humid conditions are why I NEVER recommend anyone to visit during this month because it is so miserable.
The average temperature during the day is a sweltering 29°C to 30°C (84°F to 86°F). Recent years have seen a lot of flooding on the Han River. If you do find yourself visiting during this time, then this is my list of the best things to do during rainy season in Korea.
August Weather in Korea
The summer heat in August is usually the worst. The maximum temperatures in August are usually 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F). It feels like more because of the intense humidity that is brought on from July. Even in August, it still rains a lot.
Typhoons in Korea
If you live in Seoul, you’ll be fine. I’ve experienced “typhoons” in the big city and they’re honestly nothing but a bunch of hot air being blown around. However, if you live in a coastal town like Busan or island like Jeju, they are no joke. Make sure you stock up on appropriate items and watch the news religiously for updates.
Public Holidays During Summer in Korea
Be aware if you’re visiting during these public Korean holidays, businesses could have different hours, be closed, or it will just be crowded because everyone has off.
Memorial Day and Liberation Day are the biggest summer holidays in Korea with many events and ceremonies taking place throughout the country. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience Korean culture.
- June 6th – Memorial Day
- August 15th – Constitution Day
What to do during summer in Korea?
The list of things I can recommend to do in summer activities in Korea is literally endless. There’s so many fun activities to try if you know where to look. Korea really comes alive during the warmer months and it is also a great time to visit if you like hot weather. If you have a Korea summer vacation on your mind, look no further my friends.

- Everland – This is an outdoor amusement park and I’ve been here many times. It has a zoo, roller coasters, and the Caribbean Bay Water Park.
- Lotte World – It is the biggest indoor amusement park in the world. It’s conveniently located indoors so you’ll find lots of air-conditioning.
- Aqua Field Spa Goyang/Hanam Water Park – Since I used to live on the ghetto side of Hanam, one of the only highlights was the Aqua Field and its a really nice spa. You can also experience their indoor and outdoor water park.
- Yongpyeong Water Park – During winter, they have an awesome ski resort, but in summer you can experience their awesome spa and water park. They have water slides, a pool, and a sauna.
Night Markets in Seoul
Since temperatures and sunny days make the weather very hot during the day, you’ll be right at home with the South Koreans who are night owls. It’s also a good way to experience the local culture.
Dongdaemun Night Market
If you still wanna shop after 10pm, right by Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station you’ll find tall buildings to fulfill all your shopping needs. They offer selections on women’s clothes, men’s clothes, shoes, bags, other kinds of accessories, and even food.
Under the bright yellow tents of Dongdaemun Night Market exit 4, you can even haggle for the prices of items. They even have a theme park ride called Disco Pang-Pang.
Namdaemun Night Market
Located in the middle of the city, this market is open from 10pm to 5am. It is one of the most famous night markets in Seoul. Just be aware this market is usually closed on Sundays and sometimes opens whenever it feels like it.
Gwangjang Night Market
Established in 1905, Gwanjang Market is one of Seoul’s oldest markets. This market is especially known for selling hanbok. It is very close to the Dongdaemun Market so you can visit both in one night.
Enroll in a Korean Language Program
If you thought about getting a visa to stay in Korea longer term, why not try an international summer program? It’s a great way to get the cultural experiences and even join some student clubs.
I’ve also had many friends join graduate schools in Korea and they have told me the student community is awesome. If you’re looking to experience the rich culture of Korea, I cannot recommend studying abroad enough.
Yonsei University
The Yonsei International Summer School is a unique opportunity to study the Korean language. Serious students will find themselves much more proficient in the language. International students must have a valid passport and follow the application process in your home country as each one has different requirements.
For American students you’re going to need to see if your US credits will transfer over. You should also be in good standing. For additional information on admittance and even financial aid, click here.
Fun fact… Did you know one of the most notable alumni from Yonsei University is J.Y. Park?
Sogang University
They also have a great Korean Language program. Their program focuses on speaking skills rather than grammar. As someone who studied Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), I can really get behind their students first language program.
Sogang University offers short-term programs as well so you can definitely come to study Korean for the summer. One of the great things about studying Korean in Korea is that you will be in a natural setting with lots of opportunities to use it. For more information on their programs, click here.
IESP Study Abroad
I wish I had known about this awesome program when I was in university. I am one of four siblings and my dad planned to put all of us through college so there was no way my family or myself could have afforded it.I like how they’re for ISEP students and helping everyone get the financial aid they need to study abroad.
They also have an ISEP Student Services Officer who will help you navigate through a residence permit and paperwork. The program even includes an ISEP direct budget page where you can see how you can afford your study abroad.
ISEP also has a partnership with Hanyang University to study abroad for their summer abroad program. Hanyang is located in the heart of Seoul, is one of the most prestigious universities, and has a beautiful campus.
Off-Campus Housing In Korea
I personally wouldn’t want to stay in the tiny twin rooms in student housing. Many students prefer to find their own accommodations. One of the most popular options for long term off-campus housing in Korea is to book an Airbnb. I do it when I go to Seoul. Another good thing about Korea is there are many study rooms!
Korean Language Summer Camp in Seoul
This program will be held from July 8th through July 26th for three hours a day from 9am to 12pm.
Skip the hassle and immerse yourself in this Korean language study program by Seoul National University’s Science and Technology program. With this program you’ll get 36 hours of Korean language class, three cultural activities, and a Korean dorm room with a twin bed.
The deadline to sign up is May 31, 2024. You can sign up for the Korean Language Summer Camp in Seoul here.

Enjoy A Korean Spa Experience
For me, summer means a lot more breakouts than normal. For me, there is nothing more relaxing than going to a Korean spa, getting my skin cleaned, and a massage. Summer means sun damage to the delicate skin on your face.
Whoo Spa was the best experience with top of the line Korean skincare. You will receive spa treatment using medicinal herb products from LG’s premium cosmetic brands, OHUI, Whoo, and SU:M.
During the experience, a professional beauty therapist will provide you with a soothing massage to destress your facial or body muscles and remove toxic waste from your skin. After I was done, my skin was glowing.
Try Water Sports
In recent years, I’ve seen water sports on the Han River in Seoul become more and more popular. You can try paddle boarding, windsurfing, and even kayaking! How cool is that? Book your Han River Water Sports experience here.
Go To a PC Room
Video game culture in South Korea is next level. As a matter of fact, some of the most famous pro gamers come from The Land of the Morning Calm.
If you’re looking to escape from the heat, it is super cheap to play video games by the hour. A lot these PC rooms also offer drinks and snacks you can purchase on site.
Best Pools in Seoul
Looking for the best places to go swimming in Seoul? One of the best ways to beat the heat is to find a pool or an awesome pool party.
Hamilton Itaewon Pool Parties
Every summer the coolest pool parties are held at the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon. No children are allowed and the most interesting people get down to really loud and rad music. They’re usually held every Saturday and Sunday. Drinks are on the moderately priced side, but it’s a great way to beat the heat. In my not too humble opinion this is one of the best things to do in Seoul in the summer.
Banyan Tree Pool
The Banyan Tree Hotel in Seoul is one of my absolute favorite luxury hotels! Not only do you have a pool in your room, but you also get to experience the luxurious outdoor one complete with cabanas.
If you’re interested in amazing views of Namsan Tower and the best Seoul has to offer, book your stay at Banyan Tree here.
Scare Yourself Silly
Koreans do horror and suspense really well. I had my students recount scary stories to me one day, and they literally gave me goosebumps. In America, scary movie season is almost always in September and October while in Korea it’s during summer. Why? Well, summer is hot and when you get scared, you get cold. fun things to do in seoul with friends
Well, you don’t have to see a Korean movie without subtitles with this spooktacular option. You can get down with your basic witch self and this Dark Side of Seoul Tour. They will take you to the spookiest places locals usually avoid because of urban legends or dark history. After all, they gotta creep it real. You’ll walk through alleys, hidden streets, and hideaways for a most fangtastic experience.
Ride The Tubester
Going on the Tubester is one of the best things to do in South Korea if you’re looking for a unique experience. Situated right by the Banpo Floating Islands, you can rent this tube with five other people, bring your own food and drinks, and watch the sunset. 10/10 recommend.
Go To The Beach
The East Coast seems to be where it’s at for most beach and sea activities. After all, any holiday would be incomplete without getting sand in places it doesn’t belong. 😉
- Busan – Korea’s second largest city has tons of beaches and fun water activities to do. Try a luxurious yacht tour in Busan and make unforgettable memories with your friends.
- Deokjeokdo – This is Korea’s hidden island gem. Just off the coast of Incheon, it only takes one hour by ferry to get here. It’s especially popular for camping.
- Seamarq Hotel– The Seamarq is located in Gangeung. With a luxurious infinity pool, and rooms overlooking the stunning ocean, this hotel is the perfect getaway.
Take a Trip to Jeju
If you’re planning on spending a summer abroad in South Korea, you absolutely cannot miss traveling to the magnificent Jeju Island. While the weather in Korea during summer may be stifling but the best way to escape it is by enjoying cool ocean breezes in Jeju.
In addition, Jeju has a very unique culture, beautiful sites like Hallasan, and enchanting tea fields to enjoy. Check out my Perfect Three Day Jeju Itinerary if you’re planning on taking a small excursion there. I think Jeju is one of best places to visit in South Korea because of its natural beauty and laid back vibe.
Take a Trip to Busan
This is the most popular summer destination in Korea, so be aware it will be crawling with local and foreign tourists. There will be kilometers of sunbrellas at Haeundae Beach so watch out for that too. You’ll find so many charming cafes, seafood restaurants and many things to do in Busan.
The most Instagram worthy place in Busan is the Gamcheon Culture Village. One of my favorite highlights of South Korea is visiting this seaside city.
Busan is the best place to visit Korea in summer because of all the fun festivals and beaches available. The air is less polluted there and the sea air gives off a great summer vibe. You can book a one day Busan bus tour here.
Take a Trip to Gangneung
If you’re looking where to go in South Korea for a great beach holiday, you can’t go wrong with a coastal town. Ganeung is one of my favorite South Korea vacation spots.
If you’re wondering where this photo was taken, it was at the Seamarq Hotel in Gangneung. It was the first hotel to have an amazing infinity pool looking out into the ocean. It’s one of coolest things to do in South Korea!
What To Eat in Summer in Korea
Every season in Korea brings seasonal fruits and dishes. If you’re trying to keep cool, try one of these awesome foods. Here is my list of the best summer food recommendations in Korea. Enjoy and stay hungry!
- Bingsu 빙수 – This dessert is ice cream with shaved ice and your choice of toppings such as chocolate, fruit, or red bean. I absolutely love 설빙 (it’s a chain around Seoul) for bingsu in summer.
- Bungeoppang 붕어빵 – This is a fish shaped bread with an ice cream filling. They’ll put chocolate, sprinkles, and nuts at the bottom. It’s seriously sooooo delicious.
