As a foreigner, one of the scariest things for me is going to a Korean hair salon. Which is why there’s only one hair stylist in Seoul I will ever let touch my hair—and that would be Dean from The Days Hair Salon in Hongdae. He specializes in foreign hair, so rest assured, you will be in good hands.

In Korea, you need to find someone who has worked with foreign hair and speaks English in order to ensure that the cut, color, and treatment is right. A woman’s hair is her pride and glory and we always want to know if we’re in good hands. This Seoul hair salon is going to do you right.

The Days Hair Salon

This hair salon in Seoul is part of the Hongik University Exit 9 family. Koreans are very particular about their hair so finding a salon that isn’t gonna royally screw up your luscious locks is important. Rest assured you’ll be in good hands because The Days only uses high quality professional salon products by Loreal. Two brothers own the salon and they’re very passionate when it comes to the art of hair. In my not so humble opinion, it’s the best hair salon in Korea.

The Experience

I love to wear my hair long during winter (because it’s so darn cold) and I usually cut it short for the summer because it’s more manageable and easier to keep out of my face. This time, I decided to keep my long hair and opt for an ombre. This is something I’ve always wanted to try and have never gotten around to doing. I was super excited to finally be able to try because I know the stylist. Korean hair dresser Dean has worked with foreign hair before and he would know what to do with mine.

Before he got to cutting, dying and styling my hair, I showed him photos of what I wanted. He looked at the photos, my face and complexion and then we decided which color and cut would match my face and complexion. Talk about cool stuff.

I was greeted by Dean and asked by his intern if I would like any beverages. I placed my order and was provided with a wonderful beverage and snacks. Which I actually totally needed as I didn’t eat lunch… Whoops.

The Hair Cutting Process

First, I was taken to get my hair washed. After, Dean trimmed and cut off all the dead ends from straightening my hair it all winter. After, he put a small amount of hair dye and a mask mixed together. This was so my hair wouldn’t be as damaged or fried from the bleach. I have a lot of hair, so he took portions of my hair, piece by piece and made sure the dye was applies properly for a great ombre. He left the mixture about 20 minutes and then it was washed out of my hair.

Dean is great at English and really fun to talk to. We traded stories and he’s super interested in learning about foreign languages and cultures. Since travel is pretty much one of the biggest things on my mind, I had a great time.

After, Dean mixed the desired lighter brown and red colors to give the tint I sought after in the photos I showed him earlier. This was left in about 20 minutes and it was washed from my hair again. After, he styled my hair really beautifully by straightening the roots and using a curling iron to do a natural wavy look. As you can see in the before and after shots, my hair looks super natural and wonderful.

September 2018 Update

I decided to go darker for autumn/winter and Dean did a balayage with my hair. It ended up looking spectacular and has been one of my favorite looks to date.

Why I Love Korean Hair Salons

The service is legit the best. In America, they want to get you in and out as fast as possible. In Korea, I headgasm every single time. And yes, headgasm is actually a word that I have made up. This means an explosion of happiness on your head because it feels good. BOOM. While they wash my hair, I get a head massage that makes me feel like I’m in heaven. Everyone who hasn’t experienced a Korean hair salon needs to do so at least once in their lives. Seriously. The Days is no exception as they have phenomenal service and staff.

The Verdict?

Would I go and get my hair done by Dean again? Absolutely and I did! After I discovered Dean’s Salon it is the only place I returned to. He was professional, did a wonderful job, gave me free samples of shampoo and a hair mask for my hair, and advice on how to care for it afterward. He was very patient when listening to what I wanted and did his best to deliver my summer look.
