I’m not someone who likes to be in a large group of people and be herded in and out of locations. One of my favorite aspects of the tour is that there aren’t a bunch of guests on the tour. About the Magical Trip Tour
The designated meeting place is one of the easiest places to find. It’s literally the front Kaminarimon Gate. You know those iconic pictures of Tokyo you find all of the internet with a magical red temple? Yup. That’s the place. If you don’t know, look at this beautiful photo down below. And in case you’re wondering… I took that with my iPhone X.
Our tour guide, Yuki was waiting for us with a bright orange Magical Food Trip sign. He was super friendly and greeted us like old friends. As we walked around, he introduced us to the history of Asakusa and its importance in Tokyo.

First Stop: Okonomiyaki and Monjayaki
As soon as we walked in the restaurant, I knew it was going to be hella fun. It was built like an old house with very narrow staircases and went up about four levels.
Although I lived in Japan for three years, I’d never heard of monjayaki and I was really excited to try it for the first time. For those of you that don’t know, monjayaki is a watery version of okonomiyaki that originated from Tokyo. It contains all the same ingredients with an addition of cheesy to make it more flavorful and savory. Good news all my vegan and vegetarian friends…. They do have options just for you!
We were seated at the top at sit down dining with a table and a hot plate in the middle. We ordered monjayaki, okonomiyaki and alcohol. When you eat, you gotta wash it down. 😉
Believe me when I tell you, I have a bottomless pit for okonomiyaki and takoyaki.

Second Stop: Local Dishes
The second place was a normal restaurant extended by plastic covers and heaters to keep guests warm. Here you could eat small local dishes of your choice. I of course, chose the sashimi and the mushroom and daikon combination.
I bet you’re so drooling after reading this. Like you’re so drooling. I’m not drooling. Okay, maybe I salivated a little…
Third Stop: Ninja Bar
If you really want hole in the wall, you HAVE to check out the Ninja Bar. If no one told me where it was, I would have never known to look there. You have to go down into an underground shopping center in order to find this unique place.
Now I know what you’re thinking. Are we going to see a real ninja? The answer is yes, and he will bring you all sorts of treats like popcorn and cup sake.
And the fun doesn’t stop there, let me tell ya. When you get enough liquid courage there’s even a whole bunch of costumes where you can cosplay. Apparently I put my costume on so bad, some foreign lifer even laughed at me, but whatever. He just wasn’t having as much fun as I was. I have dubbed myself King Gina because that’s how I roll.
While we were going along on this tour with Yuki, I seriously felt like I was hanging with one of my long time friends. He was super amicable and joked with us. We even got to teach him some fun American slang. I enjoyed myself so much, I didn’t want the tour to end.

Why did I like Magical Food Trip Asakusa Night Foodie Tour so much? It’s because I’m a magical unicorn… DUH. But no, really, it’s kinda the best way to experience the authentic Tokyo nightlife. I liked going to little hole in the wall places that no one knew about and feeling like a local crawling around the best places. I’m a fan of going to hidden gems away from tourists. Even though I can speak Japanese, sometimes I still don’t know where to go and I’ve also been to Tokyo ten times. Like legit, I didn’t know there was so much food around Asakusa Station.
I really felt like I still got to eat the best Japanese cuisine. Let’s face it, Japanese diets mostly consist of fish, rice, and vegetables which is kind of what my diet is like now. My advice is to come hungry because you’re going to get the best Tokyo food tour for a hungry tourist.
