The fall season means sweater weather, and it’s the perfect time for fall photoshoots. Since it is my favorite season, I have compiled this list of creative autumn photoshoot ideas for Instagram.
In my not-so-humble opinion, fall colors provide the perfect backdrop for a fall photo session. During the pandemic, I lived in South Korea and took a lot of inspiration from social media to improve my skills.
It was the perfect opportunity to learn professional photographer expertise. Now let’s cue “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift, grab our phones, and take incredible fall pictures!

Autumn Photoshoot Ideas
Below is a list of fall photography ideas to help inspire your creativity.
Fall Picnic
A fall picnic is a great idea for autumn photoshoots. All you need is autumn leaves, a cozy blanket, a picnic basket, pumpkins, and other cute props you can find in your house.
Fall Vibes Polaroid
Get your Polaroid camera and a leaf. Find a nice pathway.
First, take a photo of you holding the leaf. Then, take another photo holding the leaf, a Polaroid camera, and a photo.
You can combine these photos in Adobe Photoshop or your favorite mobile photo editing app. I use Adobe Lightroom for iPhone.
The Leaf Balloon
If you have a tripod, you can easily take this photo. First, set up the shot and stand in the middle.
Lift one arm and snap the photo. Then, use your hand to take another photo holding a maple leaf.
These photos can be combined in your favorite editing software.
Apple Picking
Going to an apple orchard is super fun and also great for fall family photos. Besides, a lot of farms have a corn maze and hay rides adding to the autumn season aesthetic.
You can take photos in the orchard with a cute fall outfit or one of your hand with an apple cider donut. The photos below were snapped during my 10-day New England Fall Foliage Road Trip.
Pumpkin Bike
When I lived in Seoul during the pandemic, I decided to use Olympic Park as a gorgeous background for this pumpkin bike photo. Fake flowers made a cute prop and the color of the leaves at golden hour really made the photo pop.
Go To a Pumpkin Farm
Many pumpkin patches have several photo zones around them. They make for cute setups and easy photos you don’t have to string together yourself.
This photo on the left taken at Jack’s Pumpkin Pop Up in Chicago. The photo on the right was taken at a pumpkin patch in Texas.
Pumpkin Smoke Bomb
The perfect place to take one of these photos is at an abandoned site. This photo was taken at Yongma Land in Seoul.
It’s an easy idea because all you need is a jack-o-lantern and smoke bombs.
When I took this photo, I put it on a higher shutter speed to get everything since the smoke fades fast.
Pumpkin Spice Latte
Showing off your pumpkin spice latte (or fancy coffee shop order) is a super easy fall photo idea. Just find the most colorful leaves and place your drink in the middle.
Leaf Dress
The leaf dress is one of the best fall photoshoot ideas because it is so easy. Go to your local park and get a real leaf off the ground.
I used these reusable artifical maple leaves (and they look perfect no matter what). You can have a friend help you take the photo or you can do it yourself.
Take one photo with the right poses and another of you just holding the leaf. Merge these photos in your favorite app or have a friend help.
Sit in the Leaves
Another classic photo you don’t have to work hard to achieve. It’s a great way to show off your fashion and make your feed more aesthetically pleasing.
Fall Fairy
This is a super fun spin on the leaf dress. Find some long leaves or photoshop them in. Have one person place their hands in front of the camera while the other person poses. To create this photo, I purchased fall leaf photo overlays from Etsy since I mostly shoot alone.
Snuggle With Your Fur Baby
This is another easy outdoor photo shoot that showcases the joys of going for a fall walk. #teamsnuggle
Cozy in Bed
Taking a cozy home photo is one of the most creative fall photoshoot ideas. This is a favorite I see on Instagram year after year.
Everyone can relate to wanting to stay in bed, curled up in a warm blanket, watching Hocus Pocus, and drinking hot cocoa.
P.S. If you’re looking for some spooky films check out my post, Scary Korean Horror Films To Watch This Halloween.
Harry Potter Movie Night
This is my favorite photo to do for an epic fall theme. Since you’re shooting in a small-ish space, the key is to use a wide angle lens.
Big Heart
I think this is one of the cutest fall Instagram picture ideas and you can do so many variations of it. It’s so easy to do in your back yard or at the park. You’ll probably also need a step ladder and a friend to help.
Carve a Pumpkin
Carving pumpkins is a fun activity to spend time with family and friends. Plus, you can get a sugar pumpkin and make pumpkin pie.
Fairy Lights
Fairy lights are a cheap and easy way to spruce up any photo. This photo is created using separate layers and a Gaussian blur effect.
These are the fairy lights I use in case you were interested.
Get Cozy
Rejoice because you don’t even need to put on pants for this one if you don’t want to. I usually use plastic decorative pumpkins because they’re easy to store and save for next year, but you can use real pumpkins for this photo too. Pop in your favorite film and you’ve got yourself an easy cozy fall photo.
Halloween Aesthetic At Home
Not really down to go out and be wild on Halloween? Are you one of those people that prefer to stay at home and have a Halloween Party for one?
All you need are some balloons, your bedroom, and a Halloween mug. Sounds easy enough!
Heart Leaf
This idea can easily be done via a photo editing app. To create this photo, put on your coziest clothes, grab a maple leaf, and then put it up to your face. This idea is great for days you don’t want to put on makeup.
Heart Hair in the Leaves
I feel like this photo really captures the essence of autumn. I suggest dressing up in your favorite fall look and a friend to help you style your hair.
(Or again, if you’re a Photoshop wizard, just add it in post-production.)
Where To Next?
This photo can be done with a world map and props from around your house. Get creative and use what speaks to you. Fall is a great time where many people start thinking about where they want to go when Christmas rolls around in December.
Fall Photography Editing Tips
- Neutral Earth tones are a great color palette. I recommend these Fall Lightroom Presets for your next photoshoot.
- The easiest way to change green leaves to yellow, red, or orange is to play with the hues.
- Beautiful fall foliage is key. Sometimes fake orange leaves are best for photos.
Autumn Photography Props
For the photos I took myself, this is a list of all the props I recommend.
- Faux Pumpkins – They always look perfect and are harder to damage.
- Faux Flowers – I’ve reused these flowers again and again for autumn photo shoots.
- Halloween Costume – Bonus points if you cosplay for this.

Autumn Instagram Hashtags
Instagram allows for 30 hashtags per post. Use them wisely. What a lot of people don’t know about hashtags is that if they’re oversaturated in the millions, you have less of a chance to be seen. Try to go for hashtags that are in the 10k-100k range for better discovery. Here are some ideas you can just copy and paste.
