Get Travel Insurance

A common question I get is what do I need to travel to South Korea? One thing I always recommend is travel insurance. Life throws curveballs. Flights get canceled. You get sick. There’s a family emergency. I highly recommend using World Nomads Travel Insurance which you can book here. With the World Nomads Travel Insurance, you can expect:

  1. Trip Cancelation – This benefit helps you recover non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs when you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, including for an unexpected sickness that keeps you from traveling.
  2. Emergency Medical – If you get sick with COVID-19 or another illness, you can get diagnostic tests to confirm your case and other emergency medical benefits.
  3. Medical Evacuation – If you’re in an inadequate medical facility, our plans have benefits that can arrange a transfer to a hospital capable of treating your medical needs.
  4. Trip Interuption – This section helps you get reimbursed for a one-way, economy-class ticket home and any pre-paid, unused portions of your trip for a covered reason.
  5. Trip Delay – If your travels are delayed at least six hours by a covered event, you could get reimbursed for meals, hotels and other basic expenses.

If this plan isn’t for you then you can check out the different travel insurance plans World Nomads offers here.

How To Get Around

The best way to get around Korea is by purchasing a T-Money card at any convenience store and loading it with money. You can also purchase the mobile version via Klook and get a 5,000 won top off coupon to use with your purchase.

Discover Seoul Pass

This is something every first time tourist to Korea should have. The Discover Seoul Pass offers entry into 35 of Seoul’s main attractions including Lotte World Adventure, the CoEx Aquarium, and Namsan Tower. Instead of buying separate tickets, the pass literally saves you money. It bundles all the best things to do in Korea in one convenient card.

The Discover Seoul Pass comes in increments of 24/48/72 hours. In addition, the pass doubles as a T-money card to use Seoul’s public transport. You can purchase an actual physical card or the mobile app. To book your Discover Seoul Pass, click here. A lot of the activities I recommend in this post are included in the pass so definitely consider getting it.

How To Stay Connected

Luckily in Korea, there is wifi everywhere. Most cafes offer wifi for free and you can connect to various free spots around the city. However, if you don’t want to be reliant on that, you book an e-sim card and download it directly to your phone.

Map of Things To Do Seoul Korea

This map includes all the stuff to do in Korea listed in this post. I’ve separated this map into cultural landmarks, popular actives, and restaurants so it’s easy for you to find everything. Also, thanks to Wanderlog, you can also export this map into your Google Maps for easier accessibility.

Places mapped by Wanderlog, a trip planner

1. Gwanghamun Plaza

What is in Seoul? In a nutshell… A lot of culture, history, and modern blending. Gwanghamun Plaza is a public open space opened in August 2009 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Seoul has finally completed the renovation plans making it an absolutely beautiful space in the middle of the metropolis.

2. General Yi Sun Shin Statue

For those new to Korean history, General Yi Sun Shin is a hero amongst many (especially my former middle school students). He is known for having all odds against him with the Japanese invasion via Busan. With a small number of soldiers, great war strategies and his famed turtle ship, he destroyed them and sent them back to Japan with their tails between their legs. His great victory forever immortalized him and made him into a national hero.

3. Rent Hanbok at Hanboknam

This is something I always highly recommend to tourists visiting Korea. I always feel like a beautiful princess whenever I wear hanbok. One of the most foreigner friendly places is Hanboknam. They have a large variety of hanbok and staff who speak Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese. Their Hanboks go up to a US size 16. At the rental place, you have the option of getting your hair done. There are two Hanboknam Hanbok rental shops in Seoul—one is located near Changdeokgung and the other is located near Gyeongbokgung.

4. Gyeongbokgung

Gyeongbokgung is a must do in Seoul. It’s one of the five grand palaces and was the main royal residence of the Joseon dynasty. Built in 1395, it is located in northern Seoul. No matter what season you visit this stunning palace, I promise you it will be beautiful. Visiting Gyeongbokgung is one of the best things to do in Seoul.

5. Changdeokgung

Changdeokgung is one of the biggest palaces in Seoul due to the Secret Garden. While fantastic in all seasons, it really takes the cake for being amazing in spring and autumn. You have to pay a separate entrance fee to get in and it costs about 5,000won or $4.00. I recommend trying a Secret Garden and Bukchon Hanok Village tour.  Experiencing the culture is among fun things to do in South Korea Seoul.

6. Bukchon Hanok Village

The Bukchon Hanok Village is another must see in Seoul. This is where modern meets history. This village is about 600 years old and many of the homes still stand today. This is a residential district, so I highly recommend you be quiet and respectful. Other than that, enjoy taking photos and basking in the history that has been so beautiful preserved today.

7. Insadong

Fun fact—the Insadong main street is the only street in Seoul where all the signs on the buildings are in Korean only. It’s a great place to rent Hanbok, eat traditional Korean foods and snacks, and go souvenir shopping. Everyone should experience Insadong because it’s such a staple. The area is directly across the street from Gyeongbokgung. There’s so many fun things to do in Seoul and Insadong has endless opportunities to entertain yourself with traditional Korean culture.

8. Insadong Geujip

This is one of my favorite Korean restaurants in Seoul because of the price and how tasty their meals are. My favorite dish there is Dwaenjan jjigae or Spicy Bean Paste Stew. It hits the spot just right. Plus, one of my favorite things about eating at a Korean restaurant is they constantly refill your banchan aka side dishes. So come hungry because you will leave full. Dishes start at 8,000 won or $7.00.

9. Take a Traditional Korean Class

Need more of what to do Seoul Korea? One of the best ways to get into your Korea trip is by taking a traditional Korean class. You can learn so much about the culture by participating in everything that makes it so beautiful. It’s one of the best things to do in Korea if you want to make lasting memories and have great souvenirs.

10. Color Pool Museum

Koreans are huge fans of Instagram because they love to show off their lives. It’s all about aesthetic for them. If you were ever wondering how I always found such cool places, Instagram is how. The Color Pool Museum is one of the most amazing places to see in Seoul if you love color. It reminds me of a rainbow with all the bright colors and cute photo displays. If you’ve ever dreamt of being balls deep in a hot pink pool, then this is your opportunity. To book your tickets to the Color Pool Museum, click here.

11. Ikseondong Hanok Village

Wondering where to visit in Seoul for the best hidden gem? The Ikseondong Hanok Village is one of my favorite places in Seoul. During Japanese colonialization of Korea, a wealthy Japanese man bought the plot of land to build traditional Japanese homes. Another patriotic Korean businessman caught wind of it and said, “Aw hell nah.” He bought the land and built (for the 20th century) modern Hanok homes. Now, the area is known for hosting trendy restaurants, shops, and cute cafes. For a full guide to one of the trendiest places in Seoul (and one of my absolute favorite places to hang out), check out my Ultimate Guide to Ikseondong here.

12. Madang Flower Cafe

Every Seoul Itinerary should have a unique Korean cafe attached to it. Another one of my favorite cafes in Seoul blends a traditional hanok home with florals. Seriously, inside of the cafe feels like you’re sitting inside a flower garden. The drinks and snacks are a bit expensive, but you’re paying for the amazing aesthetic. For the K-drama fans, this is also a filming location of Dokkaebi aka Goblin.

13. Sala Daeng Bangkok

If you’re looking to transport yourself somewhere in Southeast Asia, the incredible Sala Daeng Bangkok is a great place to do it. Designed by a company called Glow Seoul, this cafe has amazing photo opportunities for days. I’m talking chandeliers, woven fans, fountains, and beautiful decor that is reminiscent of the ancient beauty of Thailand. I’m obsessed. Plus, they have pretty tasty Thai food here.

14. Cheongsudang Cafe

This is a Japanese inspired cafe and let me tell you… The cakes here are excellent! They’re very spongy and soft and remind me of all the delicious sweets I ate while I was in Japan. Honestly, they’re so pretty, I didn’t even want to eat them. The front is super instagrammable and you’ll for sure have seen it all over social media. It’s one of the coolest things to see in Seoul for a blend of Japanese and Korean.

15. Deoksugung Stone Wall Path

Fun tidbit about the path—it is often also called Divorce Road. This is because this path was the quickest way to the city hall where you would file paperwork to get divorced. Well, it is said you should never walk on the path with your sweetheart unless you want to break up. I don’t find Koreans that superstitious because I always see tons of couples on the path. It’s one of my favorite places to walk around in autumn because of the gorgeous Gingko trees lining the road.

16. Jogyesa Temple

Need more of what to see in Seoul? Jogyesa Temple is another popular Buddhist temple in Seoul. During Buddha’s Birthday, the temple is decorated with brightly colored lanterns. Throughout the year, you’ll see Jogyesa Temple host a variety of interesting pop up events. In 2020, they had a flower dinosaur display which was honestly one of the highlights of my year.

17. Namsan Tower

Next on what to do in Seoul, the Namsan Tower is one of the most notable landmarks in Seoul. The most popular activity is to hang your lock of love. Once upon a time I put one there with an ex Korean bf and with two of my friends. Two guesses which of those relationships are still in my life today? Namsan Tower provides amazing 360 degree views of Seoul. It’s still used a communication tower and stands at 235 meters tall. You can book your tickets to Namsan Tower Observatory here.

18. Urban Cliff Cafe

If you want to beat the crowds, Urban Cliff Cafe is a great way to get awesome photos with the Namsan Tower. I recommend going during the week for the least amount of people, in the spring, and in autumn. I personally love things to do Seoul with aesthetic views. Namsan Tower is one of the best sites to see in Seoul South Korea.

19. Banyan Tree

The Banyan Tree is one of my all time favorite luxury properties in Seoul. I love how it’s located on Namsan Mountain and is meant for relaxation and healing. You’ll get amazing views of Namsan Tower plus Seoul City. It has been by far, my favorite staycation in Seoul. Click here to book your stay at the Banyan Tree Seoul. If you’d like to know more about this epic property, check out my review of the Banyan Tree Seoul here.

20. Hongdae

Hongdae gets its name from the university—Hongik Daehakkyo or Hongik University. This area features cheap bars and restaurants because of all the college kids and young people that hang out in the area. Hongdae offers a lot of cool things to do in Seoul. They’re especially popular for unique cafes in Seoul.

21. Get Your Hair Done At The Days Dean

While I was in Korea, it was super hard to find a good hair dresser. I would not let anyone touch my hair unless it was Dean. NGL, he did the best ombre and my hair looked fine as hell when I lived in Korea. Seriously, I miss the quality of service I got in Korea. I got a head and shoulder massage, plus drinks while I got my hair done. Read all about The Days Dean Korean hair salon experience here.

22. Get Your Nails Done At The OU Nail Shop

There’s nothing quite like Korean nail art. Honestly, I prefer Asian nail art to American nail art… especially since I love shiny and sparkly things. I like how feminine nail art in Asia is and it looks so beautiful. I got my nails done for the first time in over 15 years in Korea and 10/10 recommend. Getting Korean nail art is top 10 things to do in Seoul Korea if you’re a girly girl. Book your appointment at the OU Nail Shop here.

23. Get a Korean Tattoo

I chose Donghwa Tattoo because I love her watercolor floral and feminine designs. What’s more is I knew I always wanted to get a tattoo that meant something to me. Before I left Korea, I had no idea what that would be. Well, I had a good two years to think about what I wanted because I chose the Korean hibiscus flower which is the national flower of the country.

My tattoo cost $500 but it was worth every penny. This art is going to be on my body for the rest of my life and it truly is a great investment.

24. Dinga Cake House

Dinga Cake House is one of my favorite dessert cafes in Seoul. Not only are the cakes beautifully and artfully decorated, they taste amazing too. These cakes are not too sweet because sometimes super sweet things give me a headache. This cafe is one of the top things to do in Seoul if you love dessert and want to visit a Kpop music video filming location.

25. Visit A Unique Seoul Cafe

There’s so much stuff to do in Korea! I have a list of my favorite Instagrammable Cafes in Seoul. If you’re looking for aesthetic and for views, then you HAVE to visit the ones on my list. Koreans are obsessed with coffee and quite frankly, so am I thanks to them.

26. Norebang

Did you really experience Korea unless you went to norebang? Koreans love singing the night away when they party. This is a great activity especially if you’re waiting for the train to start running after a night out. Also, I would count norebang as one of the funnest things to do in Seoul alone.

27. Myeongdong

Myeongdong was hardest hit by the pandemic. However, I have noticed it is bouncing back, but it’s not the same as it used to be. A lot of the cool cafes, restaurants, and shops that lent to its personality are gone. I will say it is still a hub for great unofficial Kpop merchandise.

28. Dongdaemun Design Plaza

What to see in Seoul? Every tourist should definitely walk around the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. It’s the main place for Seoul fashion week. The DDP is an architectural masterpiece and has spectacular light shows on it. People go there to hang out with friends or visit an exhibit.

29. Namdaemun Market

Namdaemun Market is one of the oldest traditional markets in Seoul. If you’re in the mood for Korean street food that isn’t overpriced, then this is the place to go try it. There are also several traditional Korean restaurants in the market so make sure you go there hungry. For all the damn delicious Korean food you HAVE to try, click here.

30. Yeouido

Yeouido is one of the best places to go for a Seoul cherry blossom festival. It’s super popular and packed especially during the weekends. This area is a quick hop away from Hongdae. It’s also popular to ride your bike along the Han River with the backdrop of the Namsan Tower. Yeouido Park is one of the Seoul best things to do for relaxing and taking in the scenery.

31. Han River Picnic

Yeouido Park in Seoul is the perfect place for a picnic. It’s the place to be in spring, summer, and early autumn. People go all out and bring their tents, chairs, and a bunch of food. They spend the day there and go home at night. You can book your retro Han River picnic here.

32. Han River Cruise

When I lived in Seoul, I went on several Han River cruises. The sunset cruise is seriously such a cool experience. Your ticket also gives you a free drink or alcoholic beverage. It’s breathtaking to watch the sun set and see Seoul light up at night. You can book your tickets for the sunset Eland Han River Cruise here.

33. 63 Building

The 63 Building in Seoul is host to the world’s highest art museum. In addition, you can also visit the aquarium where you can see mermaids perform. It’s a really unique and cool experience. You can book your tickets to the 63 Building’s art exhibit and aquarium here.

34. Garosugil

It’s no secret Seoulites love to shop. Garosugil is a trendy shopping area and has many plastic surgery clinics. If you’re planning to go under the knife, this is one of the closest shopping districts. Also, no one bats an eye at all the people going out with bandages on.

35. Gangnam

Gangnam was thrust onto the world map after Psy’s song Gangnam Style went viral. This is a ritzy and upscale district in Seoul. You’ll find high end stores, cafes, and restaurants. It’s also one of my favorite places to hang out because it is more laid back. There are so many amazing things to do in Gangnam, Seoul, I might just put together a full guide on enjoying yourself in this area.

36. Art Monster

Art Monster is one of my absolute favorite bars in Seoul. It’s down an alley where you can see brightly colored neon lights. In addition, it’s a great place to go drinking. You can get a bracelet and try all the craft beer they have on tap. After you’re done drinking, you pay for what you drank.

37. Mamma Mia Doosan Cafe

Mamma Mia Doosan is my favorite dessert cafe in Seoul. Not only is the outside hot pink, but it’s also got some of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted. Their cake pops are wonderful and you should also try a croffle if you haven’t already. Mamma Mia Cafe is also a great photo zone.

38. AHC Spa

If you’re interested in Korean beauty, you HAVE to try a Korean Spa experience. One of my favorite products is by the brand AHC and they have a flagship spa in Gangnam. AHC Spa is your ticket to have beautiful and glowy Korean glass skin, 10/10 I highly recommend getting your skin pampered there. You can book your experience at the AHC Spa here.

39. CoEx Starfield Library

When in Gangnam, you also need to visit the most stunning library in Asia. The CoeX Starfield Library. There’s titles there in many different languages such as English, Spanish, German, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Best of all, to read the books there is completely free. If you’re ever rained out or the weather isn’t cooperating, this is one of the coolest things to do in Korea.

40. Have a Drink at Alice Cheongdam

This is a super bougie bar in Cheongdam which… If you can believe it is more bougie than Gangnam. They’re open late and allegedly some Korean celebrities have stopped by for a drink.

41. Bongeunsa Temple

Across the street from Starfield Library, you’ll find Bongeunsa Temple. This temple is also beautiful and not as crowded as Jogyesa. The grounds are pretty big and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the resident monk bang the bells. This is a much better option if you want to do a temple stay.

42. Banpo Floating Islands

Another well kept secret in Seoul is the Banpo Floating Islands aka Sebitseom. They have stunning Christmas lights and there’s a really cool service called the Tubester where you can rent a tubing boat, bring your own food and drinks and enjoy the Han River. For more information on the Tubester, click here.

43. Common Ground

What to do at Seoul? Another cool place where all the young people hang out is Common Ground. They repurposed shipping containers to make this cool shopping center. It’s a great place to eat and take photos. If you love taking photos and Instagrammable places in Korea this is one of the most must see things in Seoul!

44. Lotte World

I also recommend checking out Lotte World. This is the biggest indoor amusement park in the world. I think the best times to go are during the holidays like Halloween and Christmas. To book your discounted tickets to Lotte World, click here.

45. Seokchon Lake

Just outside of Lotte World, you’ll find Seokchon Lake which is stunning year round. Visiting Seoul South Korea during spring for cherry blossoms and autumn for the foliage is the best time to walk around.

46. Seoul Sky

Looking to get your heart racing on your Seoul Korea trip? Seoul Sky is the fifth tallest building in the world standing at 555 meters. They have a really cool glass floor where you can see down below. It took me about five visits before I was able to stand on the glass floor and look down. It’s such an amazing experience as well and I recommend going up to their observation deck. To book your tickets to Seoul Sky, click here.

47. Knotted World Cafe

The Knotted World Cafe is part of the new craze of things to do in Seoul. The space they’ve been in has seen many different restaurants, but I think this one is here to stay! They have tons of cute photo zones, tasty cupcakes and coffee… Plus their views of Seokchon Lake are wonderful!

48. Lotte Department Store

If you have a chance, check out the Lotte Department store in Jamsil. There’s two sections. One is fancy and the other one is the normal one. They constantly have cool displays and special popups throughout the year. Also some of my favorite jewelry shops like OST and Clue are located there. They have a lot of different events throughout the year so there are many things to see in Seoul Korea.

49. Seoulism

Definitely take a break one of the coolest cafes called Seoulism. Drinks start at about 9,000 won or $8, but you’re paying for absolutely stunning views of the Lotte Tower. This cafe is a Seoul must see for all the amazing views of the Lotte Tower that it offers.

50. Olympic Park

Olympic Park is one of the best places to see in Seoul South Korea if you’re a sports buff. Don’t forget to check out Olympic Park which was the location of the 1984 summer Olympics. This is an absolute must for sports buffs. It’s also a great area to rent a bike and have a picnic when the weather is nice. In addition, during winter, they have a pop up ice skating rink as well.

51. Olympic Park Rose Garden

Go when the roses are in full bloom because the Olympic Park Rose Plaza smells like a dream. There’s so many different colored roses there. Strolling through the gardens is one of my favorite things to do in Seoul South Korea.

52. Olympic Park Cosmos Garden

This Olympic Park Cosmos Garden is right next to the Olympic Park Rose Plaza. It’s most stunning for the pink and purple cosmos during spring and the orange cosmos during autumn. The Cosmos Garden is an epic place for photos so if you want to go frolicking through a giant flower hill, now is your opportunity.

53. Go On A Seoul Night Tour

I personally love seeing Seoul at night. Night time is when there are the most interesting things to do in Korea Seoul. The way the city comes alive with all its bright and neon lights is incredible. It’s one of the most beautiful sights, but not quite as beautiful as Chicago (I’m biased, of course). Koreans are night owls and there’s so many things to see in Seoul Korea when the sun goes down. Here are some of the Seoul night tours I recommend.

54. Fun Day Trips from Seoul

Here is a list of fun things to do near Seoul. I’ve done all these activities and they definitely add to your Korea trip. Your Seoul travel itinerary should include the DMZ + JSA Tour (my personal favorite).

Everland

I personally like Everland more than Lotte World when it comes to amusement parks in Korea. It’s bigger and it has the T-Express which is a super fun roller coaster. To book your discounted tickets to Everland, click here.

DMZ +JSA Tour

If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable experience to have while visiting South Korea, then you should definitely go on the DMZ+JSA Tour. This tour will show you the history between North and South. You’ll also see the tunnels the North Koreans were digging to try and invade Seoul. At the Joint Security Area, you’ll even get an opportunity to set foot in North Korea.

Garden of the Morning Calm + Petite France + Nami Island Tour

I can’t even begin to tell you about all of the Kdramas and Kpop music videos that have been filmed in all of these places. The Garden of the Morning calm is wonderful in all seasons and if you like Asian style gardens, then this is a treat for you. Petite France is a replica of a cute southern French Village and Nami Island is also popular because Winter Sonata was filmed there. To book your Garden of the Morning Calm + Petite France + Nami Island Tour, click here.

Gyeongju

I think one of the best times to visit Gyeongju is in autumn, but its pretty great in spring too. If you’re planning a visit to the old capital of the Silla Dynasty, I have a done for you guide to Gyeongju Korea here.If you don’t feel that confident, you can book a tour.
