Where is Lafayette Louisiana?

Lafayette is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, and the most populous city. It is a parish seat of Lafayette Parish and located along the Vermilion River.

What to do in Lafayette Louisiana?

The best things to do in Lafayette, Louisiana definitely include eating some delectable dishes of crawfish and gumbo! In addition, check out the many places of Lafayette’s history including T’Frere’s Bed and Breakfast as well as the Acadian’s Cemeteries. Don’t forget to stop at Warehouse for a drink too!

1. T’Frere’s Bed and Breakfast

I’m a big believer in the supernatural and Louisiana is most likely the most haunted place I’ve ever been in my life. There’s tons of stories about the bed and breakfast. The most popular account is about a young widow named Amelie who died in a well on the property. Other stories claim after she lost her husband and child, she was sick with fever and jumped into the well. Another version states Amelie married someone her family did not approve. As punishment, they pushed her into the well and ended her life.

Patrons of the home have reported Amelie likes to scratch people she doesn’t like. If you know me, you’ll know I’m extremely adept to the supernatural. I can feel and sense things most people can’t.

While sitting in the living room, we listened to chilling stories of the house. As I sat on the couch, I was inexplicably drawn to a book hidden under a bunch of magazines. When I opened it, it opened directly to the story of Amelie.

Chalk it up to a coincidence. While the property manager was speaking with us, everyone was accounted for and in the living room. Our tour group then heard very abrupt knocking on the walls in the kitchen. My stomach dropped and I felt chills going through my body.

To be fair this is the most famous OG Lafayette, Lousiana haunted house!

T’Frere’s is a popular Louisiana bed and breakfast for ghost hunters. Would you dare to stay the night? If you dare, you can book your stay at T’Frere’s Bed and Breakfast here.

2. Acadiana Cemeteries

Another one of the most haunted places in Lafayette is the Acadiana Cemeteries. Thousands of early Lafayette settlers were buried in the cemeteries beginning in 1821. Some famous names buried in St. John include town founder Jean Mouton and U.S. diplomat Ambassador Jefferson Caffery. I visited this cemetery mid-day and man, did I work up a sweat.

Seeing the history and trying to imagine the people who came before me was mind-blowing! After all, they settled in my country hundreds of years before I was even born!

3. University of Louisiana at Lafayette Dorms

Every university in the USA has a ghost story. Even my alma matter, Illinois State, has a famous ghost that haunts the Milner Library. Of course, college students always need to keep themselves entertained. Cue the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with their own chilling urban legend.

During the 1960s, a female student accidentally stepped into an out-of-service elevator. She was tragically killed by decapitation in Denbo Dorm. The building was torn down, but since the 80s, its been reported a girl with a 60s haircut waves at students from the Denbo window.

Another popular ghost tale is about a female student who committed suicide in the 50s. After the incident, a year and a day later, another student took her life. The circumstances were fishy to the staff so they sealed off the room. Even though Baker Dorm has been torn down, students have noted unexplained events and scratching on the walls.

4. Spoonbill’s Restaurant

One of my favorite Lafayette Louisiana restaurants is Spoonbill’s. 10/10 recommend because their menu is so creative and made with fresh and seasonal ingredients. One of the easiest ways to fall in love with the South is to taste their cuisine. I feel like you truly don’t know the joys of Louisiana until you’ve felt their soul food in your well… soul! You can check out Spoonbill’s menu here.

5. Warehouse

This wasn’t on the tour, but it definitely should have been. I believe I have the spookiest story of them all! Without a doubt, Warehouse is one of the most haunted places in Louisiana! While I was waiting for a drink at the bar, I was chatting with a lovely lady from Wisconsin. As the bartender was going to grab my drink, it looked like someone purposed tipped the drinking glasses on a steel cart causing them all to crash.

We had both seen it and we were both trying to rationalize it. Like, “Oh, maybe one of the glasses up top was positioned weird and caused the other ones to topple.”

Thinking nothing of it, when the bartender came back to give me my drink, we both looked over at another glass that was sitting on the bar next to us and it flipped. That was when my stomach dropped promptly out my ass.

And when I decided I would be spending the rest of the evening on the porch away from the ghosts and ghouligans. I don’t know what was going on there, but it definitely counts as one of the most haunted places in Lafayette.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post of all the most haunted places in Lafayette Louisiana. Visit during October when its still warm. The veil between the living and the dead is thinnest during that time of year. You’ll definitely be transported into another time with the ghostly happenings.

Gina was invited on the fam tour by the Lafayette Tourism Board. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
